Thanks Patrick! The bar thing is bugging me too and it's on my list. I'll probably stick with the fixed width though (1400px) for certain reasons. I figured I'd probably bug a few people with that, but I wanted a fixed width.

Regarding the resolution, are you using any website stats or analytics programs like StatCounter or Google Analytics? You should run it for a week or so, and then view what people are using for a resolution and see how many people are even at a 1400px width resolution.

Fixed width layouts are fine, but you generally want the fixed width to fit within the screens of the vast majority of your visitors. Right now, that means ensuring that it fits within a width of 1,024 pixels.

StatCounter publishers global stats. Aggregate stats of all visitors across all sites StatCounter tracks (which is huge because they are one of the largest players in the space). You can see their resolution stats here: http://gs.statcounter.com/#resolution-w ... 005-201105

If you add the numbers up, it states that only 17.35% of the world uses a resolution 1,400 pixels or wider.

Thanks Patrick. Yes, I have Google Analytics on the forum. I will have to review that as I don't check it much. Unfortunately, most of my "visitors" so far seem to be bots (which is why I don't check it much).

Incidentally, resolved the floating bar issue by moving it to the bottom. Just 2 javascript edits. I'll probably look into positioning it better once I get more familiar with js.

My pleasure. That does look better. Unfortunately, it causes a new problem. That horizontal scroll bar actually partially covers the username and password text boxes.

Patrick, what browser are you using? I ask because I am not experiencing that issue. Either with FF4, Opera 10, or Safari4 (on a Mac though).

I wonder if that could be down to the fixed width issue. Guess I am going to have to take a second look at that.

Hey Erik,

I'm on Firefox 4.0.1 on Windows Vista. I also get it on Opera 11.10. But, not IE 8. IE 8 displays it with a little padding, above the horizontal scroll.

Sorry if this question is a little too basic, but figured I'd check, are you viewing the site at a resolution lower than 1,400? If not, shrink your browser window to below that, so that you get a horizontal scroll bar.
