I'd like a manual default field added that a user can put the URL to a YOUTUBE video in (or the video Id) and it will embed the Video in their profile.

This request now gets me thinking of what you are trying to actually achieve at the end of the day.

So far you have posted heaps of questions regarding phpBB3 and most have been answered one way or another as far as I can ascertain.

This one though suggests you have another agenda and that is something that is intriguing me now

So come on New-To-PHP-Chick, let us know just what you are trying to achieve in the long term and maybe a few of us can play around writing a few mods for you to help you achieve the result you are looking for.

MY mission is TWO FOLD

1- To LEARN Phpbb3, Php, etc. It's FASTER for me to learn the NEW Phpbb by doing things I used to do on the old one and noticing the differences. I'm sort of taking the same path with this one, ripping it apart and putting it back together. I do the same thing with toasters, vcr's, etc. Many of my questions are indirectly important. For instance - I asked, "How do I remove a default profile field"; although with that information I learned how to add new fields, duplicate, remove, edit etc. See - I don't know the variables in the new PHPBB yet, and it's been years so I don't remember much about phpbb2 either, so it speeds things up. One question I ask may answer dozens for me.

2- What I'm working on is turning PHPBB into a MUSICIANS FANCLUB and network for a Street Team; but it also be a place for fans to work together on projects, talk, build friendships, etc. It will have a sim-like/rpg game similar to "Mobb Wars" or "Dope Wars" and have incentive based mods, and collaboration mods.

I'm not attempting a phpbb-based myspace clone (although I may look into that beta code); rather a community focused on a single musician YET, gives members room to be themselves and have their role in said musicians life/career - Fans, Business Connections, DJ's, etc.. which is especially neccessary in this NEW ERA of indie music where the major labels and publishers are not involved.

A self-managed indie musician needs a way to build a fanbase and attract their target audience, manage their street team endeavors, manage team leaders, manage relationships with media and dj's, etc. A community keeps everyone close and interacting with a common goal to see said musician succeed.

Sites like MYSPACE, REVERBNATION and ILIKE are actually TERRIBLE for an indie musicians career for MANY REASONS. A few that come to mind are:

1 - The service "controlls" the user data of the fans. If an artists myspace page suddenly gets deleted their career is over? Not cool. Having a private community allows the musician to have a "contact" database of sorts of their fans, business contacts, street team, friends, family, etc. with the same POWER and privacy of a myspace but without some looming corporation controlling who's career succeeds and who's ends.

2 - The service exposes an artists fans to similar artists and competition, essentially watering down their focus on their favorite artist and diversifying the fans purchasing power. A closed community keeps the fans the musician works hard for (and spends advertising dollars to attract) focused on 1 musician.

3 - The service takes advantage by often running a label of it's own. Myspacers work hard to attract their fans to their myspace page, sign them up and do all the work - then MYSPACE RECORDS mass emails everyone and tells them about MYSPACE RECORDS artists. Essentially, every myspace artist is HELPING MYSPACE RECORDS get rich and famous, meanwhile the artists doing all this labor barely can sell a download. (FYI: I don't know one artist who ever got a check from snowcap music download sales they sold! They put them off too)

I have NOTHING against sites like myspace, reverbnation, ilike, etc. I love'em! BUT - they're BLACK HOLES to a musicians career. They're black holes for comedians, film makers and any aspiring celebrity. I could give you 20 reasons it's bad to strategically DEPEND on social networks for a web presence.

But the attractiveness of them is obvious - they're easy to manage and update for people who DONT KNOW how to do web development and for people who need, but cannot afford a powerful web presence. Most indie artists are broke (and it's because of things like this, not because of piracy!)

Back back in the ANCIENT days of phpbb, a bunch of people and I started mods for things like AUDIO TOURNAMENTS and MEMBER ACTION TRACKING (like missions where they'd do ACTUAL street teaming, yet earn virtual points and get REAL rewards), referrals rewards, affiliate things and a bunch of other stuff to modify PHPBB into being a closed community that supports 1 goal. Essentially the very same could be used for a political campaign, game fanclub or any ONE GOAL that takes a community to achieve.

The site (before it got horribly hacked!!! grrr) was EXTREMELY popular and sticky sticky sticky.

Years later (now)....I invested in a shared server to ONCE again attempt at this grandois idea. It's quite hard to explain and a lot easier to just do. I imagine it will take over a year to complete. There is no major money behind it, it's an indie attempt to have an indie site for an indie artist to be able to attract and KEEP their fans involved.

What I'm working on is not directly profit stimulating. Rather, more of a place where a community becomes the power behind the success of a single musician --- meanwhile, being a community they personally enjoy.

WOW ... well that certainly answered my question!!!

Just by reading you current requests for information I thought you were on some sort of mission in particular but I was certainly not aware of the complexity of it all.

I was about halfway through reading your reply and was thinking to myself that this project you are taking on looks like being a "lifetime" thing and yet you go on to say about 12 months to complete.

Not being rude here and you will no doubt understand where I am coming from when I say "a website is never complete" as I have found out many many times.

I am with you in regard to Social Networking sites and to me they are just upgrades of the old msn and yahoo groups where I must admit I started out myself but quickly went beyond that with my own web presence and create, with the help of phpBB and the phpBBHacks community, what I envisaged.

I am sure that you will succeed in your endeavours with this project and if other members here read your reply, then I am sure that you will get even greater input and help that will allow you to reach your goal a lot sooner than planned.

Good luck and I look forward to following your project and helping when and where I can.

  <!-- Use a construct like this to include admin defined profile fields. Replace FIELD1 with the name of your field. -->
   {PROFILE_VID_NAME}:
   <object width="425px" height="360px" >
   <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"/>
   <param name="wmode" value="transparent"/>
   <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/{PROFILE_VID_VALUE}?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US,t=1,mt=video,searchID=,primarycolor=,secondarycolor="/>
   <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/{PROFILE_VID_VALUE}?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US,t=1,mt=video,searchID=,primarycolor=,secondarycolor=" width="425" height="360" allowFullScreen="true" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent"/>
</object>
  <!-- ENDIF -->

Add Custom profile fields called "vid"

Hi Guys,

I was just looking for a simple solution to embbed youtube videos on phpbb profiles and saw this messahe from New-To-PHP-Chick.
I think your idea of mixing phpbb with some sort of social network a great idea, although it seems quite a huge task to implement. Does anyone knows if there is such an application to build a mix of forums with social network available on the net?

Cheers,

This might help a little bit more.. I don't know if it will work it looks like it will. IF it does or does not let me know. If it does not i will add it to a beta site to test.
