Cos I am still a relative n00b to all this. What does the RC mean and do I try this out or is it still in development stages?

RC means Release Candidate and yes it is still in development. It isn't really meant for a working board but to show the progress and to help mod developers see what they will be working with (in case they need to update their mod to work with the new version of phpbb).

updating to the next version under 3.0.0 is a very different experience indeed

members with large boards which have multiple mods have found problems

the less mods you have the smoother it goes - okay - the same was true of 2.0.0. but now the upgrade is so automated it's quicker but way scarier
