Help needed with width & notifications

Hi all !!! I have to admit that I am not the greatest at the forum configs but there are two things that I want to do to my forum and I have searched and searched. Even though I found a lot concerning these two items it was never exactly what I was looking for.

So here I am asking here and hoping that there is a mod or a hack or something that will help me. It all seems like it should be so easy to find but alas not for me.

Probably something to do with that "not the greatest" part.

Anyhoo:

1. I want to change the width of my forum. I want the main background to show a little more so I need to make the inside part a little narrower.

2. I have some users on my forum that hate forums because they don't want to go over and check them all the time for new posts. So they have said they would use it more if they knew when there was a new post to any forum topic. I know they can mark it so they can be notified of any post to a forum that they are involved in but that doesn't notify them of ANY new posts whether they are a reply to an old post or a new topic. Is there a way to give them the option of getting notified of everything?

Both of these would help me. So any help out there????

sorry nobody replied before now.

1. open your overall_header.tpl file in a text editor.
find the very first <table> find the width=%100 and change that percentage to whatever you want.
