|
|
Hello,
I am very proud to announce that my new book, "Managing Online Forums: Everything You Need to Know to Create and Run Successful Community Discussion Boards", is now available and can be purchased online at Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble.com and other retailers. If you are in the United States, it is being stocked nationally at Barnes & Noble locations, as well. You can check stock status at the closest store to you on their website.
"Managing Online Forums" is the result of my years of experience running forums just like this one. I wouldn't have reached this point without all of the great staff members (Brandon, Tanner, Ryan, Jared, Tom, Frank, Vincent, Jeremy, Scott and many others) that I have had and all of the supportive members that have positively contributed and helped me to build my knowledge. So, thank you for helping me to grow, improve and have the experience to share with others through this project.
The book is definitely appropriately titled: it is truly a forums management book, but with principles that can apply to other types of online communities, like blogs, as well. From creating the infrastructure of the community and setting and enforcing policies to dealing with troublemakers and managing staff. This isn't a programming book or a software book (though, phpBB and phpBBHacks.com are both mentioned ), this is all about managing the actual forums.
Here is some of the advance praise that the book has received:
"Patrick O'Keefe has been building online communities for nearly ten years. He's got more expertise and experience than anyone else when it comes to leveraging the power of community. Read this book and you'll save time and frustration. Best of all, you'll get results."
-Zack Urlocker, Executive Vice President, MySQL
"I've run online communities for many years, and Managing Online Forums opened my eyes to many things I could do better. It's required reading for novices and experienced administrators alike."
-Jared W. Smith, coauthor, Building Online Communities with Drupal, phpBB, and WordPress
“Most people learn community management the hard way - by firsthand experience. With this book, you can learn how to take care of many situations before they arise. I wish I had had it when starting out years ago.”
-Jeremy Rogers, coauthor, Building Online Communities with phpBB 2
Here is a look at the chapters featured in the book:
Chapter 1. Laying the Groundwork
Chapter 2. Developing Your Community
Chapter 3. Developing Guidelines
Chapter 4. Promoting Your Community
Chapter 5. Managing Your Staff
Chapter 6. Banning Users and Dealing with Chaos
Chapter 7. Creating a Good Environment
Chapter 8. Keeping It Interesting
Chapter 9. Making Money
It also features three helpful appendices at the end that include online resources, a glossary and blank, general templates that you can use as a basis for your own user guidelines, staff member guidelines and contact templates (pre-written messages for you and your staff to use when contacting members).
For more information on the book, including a full table of contents, advance praise, interviews and reviews, an excerpt, downloadable document templates, an example forums setup and more, please check out the book website.
Thank you for reading and for visiting phpBBHacks.com.
Sincerely,
Patrick _________________ Patrick O'Keefe - phpBBHacks.com Administrator

I hope it sells! When I get time in life and get my hands on a copy I'll probably restart my site this summer. I can't wait. _________________ Xbox Live: xTruestarx

Like Truestar I hope you get huge sales with the book.
If only my Mastercard could keep some dollars in credit I would be buying it myself. _________________ ~HG~

Patrick, congratulations brother!
You really made an excellent work and are helping so much many people arround the world with questions about a good management of online forums. I think write a book requires a little (or much) pacience and wish to contribute with the webmasters in our web.
Congratulations again.. I don't know if i could write a book, even because i don't have so pacience, but i appreciate your act.
You are really a good administrator.
Thanks for all and good luck with the book! _________________ nothing... |

I have just ordered the book via Amazon.com and should receive it here in Australia around the end of the month.
Once I read it I will get back to you with my revue if you like. _________________ ~HG~

My copy of the book arrived yesterday and I have read through some 50 pages so far and find the book very interesting and extremely informative.
It is almost a "must have" for anyone that manages a forum.
It is very easy to read and very easy to follow so for the beginner in particular, this book outlines just what is needed from an Administrator in order to run a successful forum.
Well written and well worth buying.
Thank you Patrick. _________________ ~HG~
