message body width problem

Hello. I was recently asked to help some friends change the look of their forum. This has been my first experience with phpBB and I have been learning as I go. My problem is that the width of threads is overflowing the background image.
Like this:


It should look like this:


It is only doing this on a seemingly random basis. Most pages work fine. There are no images posted in the threads that are affected, so it's not images blowing the size out. I'm not sure which tpl file controls this. I tried editing the size in the modify_body file, changing the table width from 100% to a fixed size, but that had no affect.
Any help will be greatly appreciated

So, I've figured out that it's the viewtopic_body file that controls this part of the forum. I tried changing table widths to smaller percentages or fixed sizes. I did manage to get the width smaller, but it made the pages that had been displaying properly too small, and added a lot of space to every post making them way too long.
I have no idea what else to try. As I said this is all new to me. If anyone could point me in the right direction or has any suggestions I would be very grateful.

I added the "No Thread Stretch" hack, and thought it was working. Someone has just posted a very large picture though and and the page is all out of whack again.

Anyway, I have a new and much more annoying problem which only seems to be occuring in one thread. When you click on the what is showing to be the last page of the thread, you just get the meassage "No posts exist for this topic". It's like a blank page is being added onto the end of the thread. Like I said , this is just happening in one particular thread and I have no idea how to fix it.
Any suggestions much appreciated.

*update*
I have just discovered that if you post in the thread and click on "view your message" it takes you to the non existent last page as well.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

I have a feeling that if you install DB Maintenance and run the tools it offers (through the admin panel), it may fix this issue. Specifically the "Check" and "Synchronize" options. Give it a look.
