Help! I tried to install a hack and now I'm getting this error!

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_SOMETHING in /home/foobar/public_html/forums/modcp.php on line 675

If you've ever tried to use Notepad to fix an error like the one shown above, you know how frustrating it is just to figure out which line is line 675. You suspected all along that there is an easier way and you were right.

What you need is a code editor. There are several freeware code editors available for download which not only count line numbers, but also use syntax highlighting so mistakes in PHP or HTML coding are more readily apparent.

Now I use Dreamweaver (which costs money), but before I had that program I used the freeware program PHP Editor by Pagina. It instantly made my life a whole lot easier when I inevitably made mistakes adding mods to my forum.

Here is a list of some freeware code editors with line numbers and syntax highlighting:

PHP Editor (Windows)
Crimson Editor (Windows)

jEdit (Windows, Mac)

Taco HTML Edit (Mac)
Emacs (Mac)
BBEdit (Mac)

There are more editors available out there. Some of them are free and some of them aren't, but this should give you a good start.

Happy Hacking!
