Execute custom php in new custom phpbb3 page?????

I followed the phpbb kb article and added a new page to a board.

The new page works fine to display html content as the example shows but I need to execute php code in the new page. The new page ignores my php code. Yes, the filename has the '.php' extent and runs fine stand alone. But when I embed it into my new phpbb3 page--nothing executes.

Something fundamental I'm missing for sure. I don't mind if I come out looking like an idiot, I just need to figure this out.

Issue? My astounding lack of understanding on how PHPBB is designed is still the issue unfortunately. Just executing PHP code on a custom PHPBB page was my task. I found an example that showed how to pass an array to my custom .html template page. It worked.

If there is a good tutorial/white paper out there that covers the basic structure of phpbb, I'd like to find it.
