Creating and Assigning a Custom Rank Title in phpBB 3

Postby Patrick » October 9th 2010, 11:20 am

phpBB 3 allows you to set custom rank titles for members. The most common use of this is to label someone as an "Administrator" or "Moderator", but there are many different uses for it.

There are essentially two parts to this process. The first is to create the title and the second is to assign it to a particular member or group of members.

Creating the Rank

First, let's create the rank.

1. Visit your administration control panel.

2. Click the "Users and Groups" tab at the top.

3. In the left menu, under "USERS," click "Manage ranks".

4. On the right side, click the "Add new rank" button.

5. Now, you will set the options for this rank. They are:

Title: This is the title that will be displayed next to the member's username on your site. For example, "Moderator".

Rank image: This is a drop down menu through which you can select an image to be displayed alongside the rank. On a martial arts community, for example, a popular image is a belt of a particular color (such as a black belt).

In order to add options to this drop down menu, you will need to upload image files to the /images/ranks folder of your phpBB 3 installation. After upload, go back to step 4 and click "Add new rank" again and they should appear.

Set as special rank: "Yes" means that this is a rank you will have to assign, which is what you want for our purposes. "No" means that you will set the rank based on post count and when a member reaches that count, they will earn the rank title.

After you have set your options to your liking, press the "Submit" button.

The rank has now been created and is available for you to assign.

Assigning the Rank to a Particular Member

Now that you have created the rank, you are able to assign it to an individual member. Here are the steps for doing so:

1. Visit your administration control panel.

2. Click the "Users and Groups" tab at the top.

3. The default view for this next section is the "User administration" page. This is correct. If you get something else, in the left menu, under "USERS", click "Manage users".

4. Enter the username of the user that you wish to assign the rank to and click the "Submit" button.

5. At the top right of the page, you will notice a drop down menu next to "Select form:". Click it and select "Rank." Then, click the "Go" button next to the drop down menu.

6. There is only one option on this page. Set "User rank:" to the rank that you want this user to have and then press the "Submit" button.

The rank has now been assigned to the member.

Assigning the Rank to a Group

Let's say that you want to assign the title of "Moderator", but you have multiple moderators. You have your moderators in a phpBB user group and you want to save time, assigning the "Moderator" title to all of them, instead of having to assign it one by one.

This also has the side benefit of removing the title from them whenever you remove them from the group, so that you don't have to go in and individually remove it. Here is how we can do this:

1. Visit your administration control panel.

2. Click the "Users and Groups" tab at the top.

3. In the left menu, under "GROUPS", click "Manage groups".

4. Locate the group you want to assign the rank to. Next to that group's name, click "Settings".

5. Under "Group wide settings", you will see "Group rank". Set this to the rank that you want to assign to this group. Press "Submit".

The rank has now been assigned to the group.

With this information, you should now be able to set all of the custom ranks that you want.

Thank you for reading this tutorial.
