Archiving phpbb2 forum within a phpbb3 - Is it possible?

I've upgraded my current phpbb2 to v.2.0.23, but to be honest it scares me to upgrade it to phpbb3. I'm wondering if it is possible to create an archive forum within phpbb3 running on phpbb2 script? Posting will not be allowed in the archive forum but I would like for my members to be able to access it with one login.

Can this be accomplished?

Not without heavy modifications. A lot of the data is stored and read in different formats. Passwords would be one example; in phpBB 3, they're encrypted using different methods that phpBB 2 isn't prepared to read.
