This hack implements an avatar function in the phpBB board software. You can upload your own avatar to the server and the image is displayed in a limited size without any deformations.

Note:

Most of the free providers like "datablocks" or "freedom2surf" have configured their php feature in safe_mode so you have some limitations. If safe_mode is set to "on" you can't upload any file using a php function. In that case you can disable the file upload. You'll also have an avatar function but without shrink the image size to the correct values.
